can i drive after receiving sedation dentistry?

If you receive laughing gas during your treatment, this form of sedation wears off very quickly and you will be able to drive yourself home after your procedure. Since laughing gas is inhaled, the effects wear off soon after Dr. Packard turns it off, and you will be free to go about the rest of your day as you normally would when your appointment is finished.

How Does Sedation Dentistry Work?

This depends on the form of sedation you choose in our Bowling Green office. Let’s start with oral conscious sedation (laughing gas sedation). This method of sedation uses an inhalable mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide.

Dr. Bryan Packard will place a comfortable mask over your nose before your procedure begins, then deliver a customized dose of laughing gas to your lungs. You’ll simply breathe in through your nose whenever Dr. Packard tells you to do so, and the nitrous oxide will quickly become absorbed through your lungs, sedating you and keeping you more comfortable.

At the end of your appointment, pure oxygen will be pumped through your mask for a few minutes to purge your system of laughing gas, and ensure you don’t experience any significant side effects.

Oral conscious sedation is a bit different. You’ll get a few pills that you’ll need to take about an hour before your appointment. In some cases, you may need to avoid eating the night before your appointment or for a few hours before your consultation.

You’ll simply take the pills, and then you’ll start to relax into a sedated state throughout the next hour or so. Usually, you’ll experience some side effects after your treatment like a headache or upset stomach, and your medication will wear off within about 4-6 hours.

IS SEDATION DENTISTRY SAFE?

Yes! Sedation dentistry is very common, and has years of experience administering sedatives safely to make patients more comfortable in the operatory. You can rest assured knowing you’re in good hands. The sedation dentistry options at Precision Dental in Bowling Green will keep you calm and euphoric throughout your treatment, but you’ll be awake throughout.

WHAT ARE MY SEDATION OPTIONS?

At Precision Dental, we offer “laughing gas” and oral conscious sedation to keep our patients comfortable and pain-free during their procedures. Laughing gas is inhaled throughout treatment and will keep you awake, but in a euphoric state. One of the benefits of laughing gas is that it wears off quickly, so you’ll be able to drive yourself home after your appointment and go about the rest of your day as you normally would.

We also offer oral conscious sedation, which is taken in pill-form. This sedative induces a deep state of relaxation, and in the capable hands of Dr. Packard, you truly will have nothing to worry about. If you suffer from dental anxiety or phobia, or if you’re coming in for extensive treatment, give us a call today to go over your sedation options in Bowling Green.

HOW MUCH DOES SEDATION DENTISTRY COST?

The cost of sedation dentistry varies depending on which type is administered and how much of it you need. We offer resources for our patients to help keep care at a cost you are comfortable with. We are in-network with a wide range of insurances and we offer financing options for patients who do not have dental insurance. How Does Sedation Dentistry Feel?

Laughing gas makes most patients feel “floaty,” and a bit disconnected from the events that are happening around them. You may even find things to be funny for no reason and giggle or smile, hence the term “laughing gas.” However, you will be completely conscious and responsive to commands. You won’t be “knocked out” or extremely delirious with laughing gas sedation.

Sedation with laughing gas has minimal side effects. You may feel a bit dizzy or nauseated for a few minutes, but it wears off within about 5 minutes. You can drive yourself home and get back to your day-to-day activities right away.

Oral conscious sedation creates more intense sedative feelings. After taking your pills, you may feel groggy and sleepy. It’s common for patients to fall asleep when they are sedated with this method. If you fall asleep, you can easily be woken up and you will be able to respond to commands from Dr. Bryan Packard. Even if you remain awake, you may forget most or all of what happens throughout your procedure.

The side effects of oral conscious sedation can be more intense than those of laughing gas sedation, and include headaches, nausea, slow reflexes, and drowsiness. These can persist for 4-6 hours or longer after your appointment, so you cannot drive yourself home.

What Is Sedation Dentistry Used For?

Sedation dentistry is commonly used for patients who are nervous about an upcoming dental surgery, such as a root canal, the placement of a crown, a tooth extraction, or the placement of a dental implant. Sedation helps you stay comfortable and eliminates pain and discomfort during your surgery.

However, we offer sedation for all of our treatments at our Bowling Green office. This is very useful for patients who have serious dental anxiety, and may be very anxious about routine cleanings, fillings, and other such appointments. We always want our patients to feel comfortable, so we’re happy to accommodate you if you suffer from dental anxiety.
