WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD SEE THE DENTIST FOR THE FIRST TIME?

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children start going to the dentist when they begin teething, or when they turn one year old; whichever comes first. At your child’s first dental appointment, Dr. Packard will examine your child’s mouth to check for any issues and discuss their oral health with you, answering any questions you may have. If your child already has most of their baby teeth, our Bowling Green dental team will perform a cleaning. We may also recommend x-rays, if necessary.

HOW OFTEN DOES MY CHILD NEED TO SEE THE DENTIST?

Your child should see Dr. Packard at Precision Dental for an oral exam and teeth cleaning every six months. Visiting the dentist regularly allows you to protect your child’s oral health and make sure their mouth is developing properly. These appointments are also a great opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about your little one’s teeth and gums, and get helpful advice about establishing a proper oral hygiene routine at home.

WHAT IS A FLUORIDE TREATMENT?

Fluoride treatments are used to treat tooth decay (also known as “soft spots”) before they turn into full-blown cavities. During treatment, a highly-concentrated fluoride paste is applied to your child’s teeth, is left in place for a few minutes, and is then rinsed away. Fluoride has the unique ability to strengthen and remineralize enamel, which can reverse the effects of minor tooth decay and prevent a cavity from developing.

WHAT ARE DENTAL SEALANTS?

Dental sealants are used to cover up and protect the rear teeth from tooth decay. Sealants consist of a liquid resin that is applied to your child’s rear-most molars and is then hardened using a UV light. This hard plastic layer prevents oral bacteria, acid, and food particles from contacting the enamel directly. This, in turn, prevents the formation of cavities. The procedure is fast and can be performed after a routine cleaning. Dental sealants last up to 10 years, so it’s a good investment if your child is cavity-prone and you would like to the need for fillings.

MY CHILD IS NERVOUS ABOUT THEIR APPOINTMENT. DO YOU OFFER SEDATION?

Yes! If your child is very anxious about coming to the dentist or nervous about a procedure like a filling, we offer both laughing gas and oral conscious sedation. These methods of sedation dentistry can help keep your child comfortable, and ensure they feel safe throughout their entire appointment. Inquire about sedation when you schedule your appointment with Dr. Packard in Bowling Green.
