3-D Cone Beam Imaging (CBCT)

The digital x-rays we take are invaluable when we’re diagnosing problems like decay and gum disease. But there are cases where we need a more comprehensive view, and that’s when we turn to 3-D cone beam imaging or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT).

Using 3-D dental imaging is on its way to becoming the new standard of dental care. This leading-edge technology provides our dentists with a 3-D image of the structures of your mouth and allows us to view details like the positioning of your teeth and roots, and the location of structures like your sinuses and nerve pathways

With the aid of 3-D cone beam imaging, we can plan orthodontic treatment, and perform procedures like dental implant placement and root canals with a high degree of accuracy and positive long-term results.

Nitrous Oxide

Almost anyone who suffers from dental anxiety can benefit from nitrous oxide. Also called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a fast-acting, short-term sedation option that keeps you relaxed and comfortable during your procedure.

Since nitrous oxide is a gas that we mix with oxygen, we have you inhale it through a small nasal mask. Sedation with nitrous oxide is very mild; in fact, it is safe enough to use for children who have a difficult time sitting still or need extensive treatment. Nitrous won’t put you to sleep, so you will be fully conscious and aware of your surroundings. However, the sounds and activity around you will feel far away.

At the end of your procedure, we’ll turn off the nitrous and allow you to breathe pure oxygen for a few minutes. You will leave our office feeling alert and refreshed and ready to go on with your busy day.

Oral cancer is the abnormal or erratic growth of cells that damage and invade surrounding tissues in the mouth and throat. We routinely perform oral cancer screenings at our Bowling Green, KY dental office. These screenings are particularly important if you fall into any one of the following high-risk groups:

  • Heavy smokers
  • Heavy drinkers
  • Those exposed to HPV
  • Men over age 45

Screening for oral cancer has never been more critical. The challenge is that oral cancer and abnormal cell growth begins beneath the surface. By the time we're able to see it with a visual exam, it may be in the later stages.

Oral cancer screening with VELScope is non-invasive and painless. The device uses a particular wavelength of blue light that stimulates fluorescent molecules that exist in the tissue of the mouth. Tissues affected by trauma or disease fluoresce differently than healthy tissue does, making abnormalities easier to spot. If our dentists find anything of concern, they will refer you to your primary care doctor for further evaluation.

Intraoral Cameras

Intraoral cameras are an innovation in dental technology because they allow you to get a close-up, detailed view of the inside of your mouth. The intraoral camera has a built-in light source that illuminates your mouth and takes crisp videos and highly-detailed still pictures. Now instead of sitting back and wondering what your dentist sees, we use the intraoral camera to give you a tour of your entire mouth. Our dentists are able to zoom in on a tooth so you can easily see cavities, gum disease, broken fillings, or cracked teeth.

Once we've treated your condition, we’ll give you another tour with the intraoral camera so you can see the beautiful, healthy results close up. Since the images captured are digital, we can easily store them as part of your permanent dental history. We can also email them directly to specialists and insurance companies as needed.

Digital X-Rays

Without digital x-rays, it would be impossible to provide you with the highest standard of dental care. We can’t treat what we can’t see, and dental x-rays are the only way for our Bowling Green dentists to see what’s happening inside your teeth. With digital x-rays, we can find and treat dental problems like decay and gum disease in their earliest stages before they cause discomfort.

If you’re worried about the number of x-rays you receive, you can rest assured you’re your safety is of the utmost importance to us. We only take x-rays when it’s in your best interest, and we’ve also invested in low-dose digital x-rays to make the process safer.

We use digital x-rays because of the many benefits they offer to our patients:

  • They reduce your radiation exposure by as much as 80 percent compared to older x-rays.
  • We can use these highly detailed images to find decay and gum disease in their earliest stages.
  • They are an invaluable educational tool because they let you see what our dentists see.
  • Since we don’t need to use harmful chemicals to process your x-rays, they are better for our environment.
  • We store your digital x-rays in your patient record, so it’s easy to refer to them as needed or email them to insurance companies or specialists.
