Most adults know that taking good care of their teeth is critical. But many can’t seek treatment because anxiety prevents them from picking up the phone to make an appointment.
Does this sound familiar? Some estimates say that as many as 75 percent of US adults have some level of dental fear that ranges from mild apprehension to debilitating anxiety.
Dr. Kevin Clemmons understands, and wants to help. Using sedation dentistry at our Bowling Green, KY dental office, we can dramatically minimize your dental anxiety.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Our dentists are qualified to deliver safe dental sedation, including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation. Dentistry performed under sedation offers several benefits:
- You’ll be relaxed and calm enough to get the essential dental care you know you need.
- If you require extensive dental work, we can use sedation to complete it in fewer appointments.
- Nitrous oxide is gentle and safe, so it’s perfect for children who can’t sit still in the dental chair
Minimize Anxiety with Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide was first used in dentistry over 100 years ago. Since then, it’s helped millions and millions of people get safe dental treatment with little to no anxiety.
Since nitrous oxide is a gas, you inhale it through a small nasal mask. As you breathe normally, you’ll experience a gentle wave of relaxation and well-being. You’ll feel happy and safe, and the activity around you fades into the background.
When treatment’s finished, we’ll turn off the nitrous and switch to pure oxygen for a few minutes. You’ll leave our dental office feeling alert, refreshed, and ready to get on with your busy day.
Oral Sedation for Deeper Relaxation
If you’re a very nervous patient who needs a little bit deeper relaxation than nitrous provides, our dentists would recommend oral sedation. They will prescribe a calming sedative for you to take about an hour before your scheduled appointment.
You will need a friend or family member to get you safely to our dental office because you’ll arrive feeling very drowsy and relaxed. If necessary, our dentists may recommend an additional dose of medicine to ensure that you stay calm throughout your procedure.
Oral sedation takes several hours to work its way through your system, so you will also need a driver to get you home safely from your dental appointment.
IV Sedation for the Deepest Relaxation
For some, dental anxiety is so debilitating that they want to “check out” and let us do the work. If this is the case for you, you will be happy to know that Dr. Clemmons is qualified to safely administer IV sedation to his patients.
IV (intravenous) sedation at our Bowling Green dental office will not put you to sleep. You will be semi-conscious and able to communicate with your dental team. But you won’t be aware of the activity around you, and most patients don’t remember any details of their procedure afterward.
Don’t Let Dental Anxiety Ruin Your Oral Health
We know that receiving dental care when you’re anxious can be difficult or impossible. With all the dental sedation options we offer, there’s absolutely no reason for you ever to be a nervous patient again.
