Root Canals

Would you be surprised if we told you that getting a root canal is not a painful procedure? That idea probably goes against everything you’ve heard and thought you knew about root canals.

We know that root canals probably have the worst reputation of any dental procedure. But this is the 21st century, and with improved techniques, leading-edge technology, and dental sedation options at our Bowling Green dental office, a comfortable root canal is possible.

Why You Need a Root Canal

Your tooth is made up of several layers; the outer layer is hard dental enamel, and the softer layer beneath it is called dentin. At the center of your tooth is an area that contains a spongy material called dental pulp which is made up of the soft tissues, nerves, and blood vessels that provide nutrients to the tooth.

If bacteria enter the pulp of your tooth because of decay or a crack in the tooth, it causes an infection. Because the infection reaches the nerves, it can be quite painful. Our dentists will need to perform a root canal to remove the infected material, relieve your pain, and save the tooth from extraction.

Signs That You Might Need a Root Canal

Several signs could indicate that you need a root canal. But occasionally infection can develop with no noticeable symptoms; that’s why we stress routine checkups every six months so we can find it in its earliest stages.

Some signs of an infected root canal are:

  • Intense tooth pain that worsens over time
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • A raised bump on your gums
  • A foul odor or taste in your mouth

If you notice any of these symptoms, you may need a root canal at our Bowling Green dental office. Please call us right away, and we’ll see you as soon as possible. Putting off a root canal procedure will only result in continued pain, and you may even lose the tooth.

What Happens during a Root Canal

At Briarwood Dental, we do everything to ensure that your root canal goes smoothly. First, we’ll provide a local anesthetic that numbs the area we’re treating. Our dentists won’t begin your procedure until they’re sure that you are numb and comfortable.

The next step is to make a tiny hole to access the interior of your tooth. Then our dentists use state-of-the-art rotary endodontic technology to clear away the infection that’s causing your pain. They will disinfect the tooth, fill the interior with an artificial material, and place a temporary filling on the tooth.

You may feel some sensitivity after your procedure, but most patients get the relief they need with over-the-counter medications like Advil or ibuprofen. Our dental team will schedule a follow-up appointment for about two weeks so we can take a look at the tooth and place a permanent filling or dental crown to protect it.

Sedation Dentistry Ensures Your Comfort

It’s common to be anxious about having a root canal, but we will do everything to make the process as comfortable as possible. We’re pleased to offer nitrous oxide as well as oral and IV sedation at our Bowling Green dental office for your complete comfort.
